I bought a copy of FlyteTyme, now how do I get started?

FlyteTyme is very easy to use.  These instructions will help you get your electronic logbook up and running in no time.

  1. Put the FlyteTyme CD in your CD-ROM drive.  The setup wizard automatically starts, follow the on-screen instructions.  If the setup wizard does not start, double-click the My Computer icon, then double-click the icon for your CD-ROM drive, then double-click on SETUP.EXE.
  2. When FlyteTyme first starts, you will be presented with a dialog box indicating a logbook was not found. Select 'Yes' to create a new, blank logbook, or select 'No' if you are a prior FlyteTyme user and already have a logbook stored somewhere on disk.  If you are recovering a backup copy of your database, select 'Yes' to create a new, blank logbook, then use the Restore feature.
  3. FlyteTyme will take a few seconds to create and open your new logbook.  The opening screen will be presented. This screen displays your medical, BFR, CFI, and approach currency information.
  4. You are now ready to start entering flight information!  Select the Data Entry menu, and then select Flights. You will be presented with the Flight Entry window. Click on to create a new flight record and begin entering data.
  5. When you enter the aircraft type, FlyteTyme will ask if you would like to create this aircraft. Select 'Yes.'  The Aircraft Entry window will appear.  Select the proper Category/Class, Powerplant, Operator, and check the Type Rating box if one is required for this aircraft. Click on to save this aircraft information and to close this window.
  6. You will be returned to the Flight Entry window. When you are finished entering the data on this flight, click to save this flight information and to close this window.

Congratulations! You have entered your first flight in FlyteTyme! You can select the Reports menu, the click Flight Log to see your work.

Now that you understand the basics, you can use the Tools menu, and then select Options. On this screen you can set up FlyteTyme to automatically enter some of your flight data for you.  You can also configure medical, BFR, and CFI renewal date reminders and approach currency tracking!

Can I back up my data?

Absolutely.  FlyteTyme includes Backup and Restore functions under the File menu. Using these functions you can keep backup copies on your hard drive, copy your data to a floppy, or transport your entire logbook to another computer using FlyteTyme.
We highly recommend you backup your logbook on a regular basis in case you experience a voltage surge or disk malfunction that corrupts your data.

I think my files got corrupted, what do I do?

FlyteTyme has two types of files in its system. The application files include all the information FlyteTyme needs to run. The data files include all the information related to your particular logbook.

If you suspect the application files are corrupted, backup your logbook files and re-install FlyteTyme from the original CD-ROM.  FlyteTyme will reload onto your system without erasing your data. (But backup anyway, just in case.)

If you think your data files are the problem, select the Tools menu, then click on Rebuild Tables. During this process, FlyteTyme will completely rebuild your entire logbook which should take care of any imperfections in your data that may have occurred. If this still does not solve the problem, then you will have to restore your data from a backup using the File menu, then clicking Restore.

NOTE: This last procedure will cause you to loose any changes you have made since the last backup.

What improvements to FlyteTyme are planned for the future?

Airline Application Compatibility.

Since FlyteTyme was originally designed not only as an electronic logbook, but also as a tool for the professional pilot in the job hunting process, we will be incorporating airline specific reports to make filling out applications as painless as possible.

For example, if you are applying for XYZ Airlines, just select 'XYZ Airlines' from the report menu and FlyteTyme would create a report of your flight records divided up and ordered exactly like that airline wants on their application.

Windows Mobile Version.

Enter flight data at the aircraft, then upload all your flight information into the desktop version of FlyteTyme.

How can I make my data entry faster and easier?

  • Use the Options window!  You can find the Options window on the Tools menu. Enter your name under Pilot's Name, and your name will be printed on all reports.
    • Select an aircraft, duty position, departure and arrival identifiers, FAR Part, and taxi time to be automatically filled in by FlyteTyme.  You will not have to repeat keystrokes again!
    • Every time you create a new flight, FlyteTyme will automatically fill these values in for you!
    • These values can be changed as often as you like, so if you have flown one aircraft several times in a row, and then you fly another aircraft many times after, change the default aircraft type.
  • Select a maximum limit for all times--9.9 hours, 99.9 hours, 999.9 hours, or 9999.9 hours.
    • Most pilots will want to select a 9.9 hour maximum.  Then, you can enter all times by typing two digits--no decimal point necessary!
    • If you fly tankers or transports and regularly fly 10 hours or more in a leg, select a 99.9 hour maximum.
    • If you keep a written logbook as your primary record and only want to use FlyteTyme as a number cruncher, select a 999.9 hour or 9999.9 hour maximum and enter your flights in monthly or annual totals instead of individual flights.  This feature alone can save you hours of work!
